There are McDonald’s and Burger Kings on almost every street corner. For those who want to try something new and different, there are Turkish (gyros, falafel) and oriental fast food joints on all the main streets, which serve delicious food (lots of veggies!). For a good Hungarian meal, try one of the Hungarian restaurants we recommend below.

Our Favorite Restaurants in Budapest:

Iguana Bar and Grill (Mexican)

The restaurant is an enchanting Latin-American island in the heart of Budapest’s business center. On holidays and special occasions the atmosphere becomes very festive and lively and sometimes the crowd even spills into the street. The fare is Mexican – and partly southwestern. The tortillas are homemade and Iguana imports many chilies and spices from Mexico. One of the secrets of their success is the quick service of generous portions.

Taverna Dionysos (Greek)

When you enter the Dionysos, you feel like you have been invited to a big Greek party on a sunny island. Chef Attila Dávid spent time on the island of Crete, where he soaked up the native culture and its wholesome cuisine. The emphasis is on fish and seafood, as well as lamb and salads.

St. Jupát (Hungarian)

Wooden tables, wooden plates, meat meat meat, and good prices. Try the Szent Jupat mixed grill for two or the Budapest beef tenderloin. The portions of fried cheese and fried mushrooms are gigantic! They also have some of the best gulyás soup that you can find.

Náncsi Néni Vendéglője (Hungarian)

Upscale Hungarian in the Buda hills - 20-30 minute taxi ride from downtown Pest depending on traffic and starting point. Warm, inviting inside decor, friendly and consistently good service, nice outdoor patio/garden in summer. Fun menu, including children’s choices. Food is excellent, ‘home-style’ Hungarian. Try the Somlói Galuska for dessert, it is one of the best in Hungary! Best place for a Sunday family meal in the summer.

Remiz (Hungarian)

Although Remiz means ‘tram depot’, the trams glide past silently. In the summer, everyone sits outside and enjoys the aroma of the grilled dishes wafting across the bushes. Enjoy excellent salads and one of the best and healthiest lunch options around. The grilled salmon is divine and the chunks of meat grilled on skewers will delight carnivores. Choice wines from all over Hungary and naughty desserts can also be found on the tantalizing menu.
